A portion of this post was published in an earlier article here. It’s not surprising that I’ve had more requests for profiles of Taylor Swift than anyone else, especially recently since her incredibly successful Eras tour and high profile relationship with Travis Kelce have propelled her into a new stratosphere of fame.

Relationships have always been integral to Taylor’s creativity and her songwriting, and fans apparently peruse every word for clues to the details of her loves and breakups. Her relationships have not always been easy and her astrological chart does show some interesting things that offers insight into the complexity behind the relationships that make such interesting material for song lyrics.

Taylor (December 13, 1989) was born with the Sun in Sagittarius, the lucky and optimistic sign that can be somewhat fickle. Her Sun is unaspected, meaning it doesn’t interact with any of the other planets in the chart.  People with unaspected Suns tend to make their own way in life, even though they may, and do, engage in relationships with others and even marry.  But still, singleton Sun people tend not to merge their lives with anyone else’s. (Here is a breakdown of the controversy over Taylor’s time of birth and ascendant if that interests you.)

The Freedom-Closeness dilemma. Her Moon is in emotional Cancer, revealing her sensitivity and family-oriented nature.  The Cancer Moon can be moody and reactive to emotional hurt, and with her Moon conjunct Jupiter, also in Cancer, the emotionality of her inner world is amplified which comes out in her song lyrics.  The Cancer Moon longs to attach and find emotional security, but her Moon is opposed by Uranus, the planet of individuality and autonomy, revealing an opposing need for distance and independence.  This is intensified by the fact that Venus, the planet of love and attraction, is in the sign of Aquarius which is ruled by Uranus.  In Aquarius, Venus seeks relationships that offer plenty of freedom and the ability to continually bring fresh new energy into the partnership.

The Cancer Moon feels all of the emotion, and the Uranus influence wants to jump right into the relationship without thinking.  But after a short time the stress between the need for emotional connection (Cancer Moon) and the desire to flee and be free (Venus/Uranus) creates a schism that requires a breakup. This is a classic “freedom/closeness” dilemma that Liz Greene talks about in her series on psychological astrology and which I see every day in my practice.  A part of us longs to be connected and find our true partner; another part of us sabotages our relationships at every turn.  This dynamic tends to operate on the subconscious level, which makes it difficult to resolve, especially when we are younger.

Joe Alwyn. (chart) Taylor started dating Joe in late 2016, perhaps around October. This was a tumultuous time for her – between 2014 and 2016 she had some very challenging planetary cycles (Uranus square Saturn, Pluto conjunct Saturn, Jupiter square Pluto, Pluto opposite Chiron, Chiron square Sun). These planetary cycles coincided with a series of power conflicts, such as removing her catalog of songs from streaming platforms which led to Apple Music agreeing to increase payments to artists. In the Netflix documentary Miss Americana Taylor reveals the emotional challenges of this period, including references to an eating disorder. She became enmeshed in a bizarre conflict with Kanye West. She broke up with Calvin Harris and was accused of cheating on him.

She and Joe retreated into a bubble as she pulled away from the chaos of her career and this likely suited Joe who has a very different astrological chart than Taylor. With the Sun in Pisces he can be gentle and intuitive, but he also has Venus in assertive Aries and the Moon conjunct fiery Mars, giving him enough fire to withstand the heat of a passionate relationship. He was born February 22, 1991 at the beginning of the conjunction of Uranus and Neptune – a planetary combination of great creativity and imagination but one which isn’t very grounded despite the fact that the conjunction was in earthy Capricorn. We can see how Joe would have offered the perfect cocoon during a challenging time, what she called a “lavender haze.”

Saturn aspected both Taylor and Joe’s Venus in 2020 during the first lockdown, and they both went through their Saturn returns during their relationship (Taylor’s in 2019 and Joe’s in 2020).  Saturn transits can feel like lockdowns anyway, so this may have been a time when a greater commitment was discussed. The 2020-2022 period was graced with mostly supportive planetary cycles and their relationship seems to have been fairly smooth during this time.

Bumps in the road seem to have begun when Taylor began preparing for her record-breaking Eras tour and reports say that Joe was not prepared to deal with Taylor’s degree of fame. Joe is more of an actor’s actor than a star or celebrity – he has managed to stay under the radar and out of the spotlight.

Travis Kelce. (chart) Born October 5, 1989 (time unknown), Travis is a different guy altogether. He has the Sun in Libra, lover of relationships, and it conjoins Mars to energize his chart and add more than a touch of competitiveness. His Moon is in optimistic Sagittarius and the Moon’s ruler (Jupiter) is in Cancer, the sign of the Moon (mutual reception). Saturn, the planet of discipline and achievement which is so strong in Taylor’s chart, is also strong in Travis’s chart since it squares his Sun, and Mars. Individuals with this placement often feel driven to prove that they are good enough.  And his Venus is in passionate Scorpio, harmoniously tied to his Virgo Mercury which is pragmatic and disciplined.

Different times, different relationship needs.  When we are older and look back on our lives we can sometimes see that our past relationships served different needs. I never look at relationships at having “failed” – they simply run their course and if we change and the relationship doesn’t, sometimes it must end.

The ascendant describes the way we appear to others and the way we live our lives, and it is often the first thing we see when we observe someone. Where Joe appears quiet and introverted, Travis seems to enjoy the limelight which will feed and nurture Taylor’s incredible popularity, fame, and power.
