In a time before a war in Iran took the tales of a global Epstein conspiracy out of the news, the trial of the drugged rapes of Gisele Pélicot by her husband and his accomplices shocked the world. Her bravery in speaking out and making herself heard has inspired women everywhere to leave behind the shame of abuse in the campaign against sexual violence.
As an astrologer, the dark turn that this campaign has taken interests me. Back in 2018 the Me Too movement exposed the harassment that many women have experienced in the workplace and other areas of life. Back then I connected this to the Black Moon Lilith:
The “Me Too” movement began in the United States, and while its message has spread around the world, its influence is predominantly American. The first glimmer of the movement began back in June of 2017 when female workers in Silicon Valley began to express frustration with a “culture of harassment.” …
When all of this first came down I couldn’t help but think this sudden eruption of rage smelled just like the Black Moon Lilith (follow this link for other information about this fascinating planetary point). The Black Moon Lilith embodies a primal feminine rage against the patriarchy that is very interesting in astrological charts where this point is prominent …
Lately though, things have turned even darker. The exposure of the world wide web of criminal abuse centered around Epstein, and the story of Gisele Pélicot, point to a terrible cancer in relationships between men and women. This has always been a thread through human society, but perhaps it is the perspective of Pluto entering Aquarius and seeking fairness and justice that has led to greater exposure.
At any rate, the astrological chart of Gisele Pélicot is a fascinating look at the astrological influences in the fight against the patriarchy and sexual abuse. First we see the Sun in Sagittarius, in a trine to the South Node suggesting a resolution of a major event from the past. Sagittarius itself is a sign of faith and optimism, and doesn’t tend to foster much suspicion. Mercury, describing the way we think and process information, is also in Sagittarius – trusting and optimistic. In an interview in the New York Times she said “I believed him [even after he was arrested for filming up women’s skirts], and that’s what’s terrifying for me to think about even today.” Jupiter, which is prominent in the chart as the ruler of the Sun, the Midheaven and the Ascendant, is in a nearly exact square to the lunar nodes which tell the story of our journey from the past to the future.
Gisele Pélicot chart here. There is much that can be said about this chart: Venus in Capricorn which has a lot of staying power, and Saturn in tight conjunction to Neptune, in Libra, which can overromanticize situations (especially in the seventh house of marriage as it is here). But what jumped out to me is the combination of Pluto, the Moon, and the Black Moon Lilith. Pluto is only 3′ of arc from the Moon, indicating someone with a great deal of transformational trauma in their lives. And the fusion of the Black Moon Lilith, the significator of the primal rage against patriarchy and oppression, is powerful. BML relates to a primal rage and terror and power that exists in its raw form, unlike the Pluto archetype which takes those primal emotions and uses an alchemical process to achieve transformation and enlightenment. The combination of these two elements in a chart carries a great deal of power, as does the presence of Mars at the North Node, .
Still, not everyone with this aspect in their chart will have the same experience or courage as Ms. Pélicot. In fact her husband, born just 10 days before her, shares many of these aspects. Astrology tells only part of any story, and we cannot know the karmic story behind these events. We can say that with the Me Too movement having opened the door to women telling their stories of harassment and abuse, and the Epstein revelations, Ms. Pélicot is a hero(ine) for our time.
