There is a point just before a baby is born that is called “transition.” At that phase of birth, when the baby begins the descent into the birth canal, the mother is flooded with adrenaline and will sometimes decide she wants to go home and forget about having a baby. The intensity can become simply too much to bear, but there is no other option.
We are in one of these transition points right now as far as global astrology is concerned. We have shifted from Earth into an Age of Air for the first time in 800 years. Pluto is in the process of shifting from Capricorn, an earth sign, to Aquarius, an air sign. Over the next few years all outer planets will have changed signs to create major shifts in human consciousness. (You can read more about this in my post on the Astrology of the 2020s.)
Last year I wrote that 2024 will likely be a period of adjustment as we transition into these new energies. Pluto in Capricorn can feel quite concrete, whereas Pluto in Aquarius will foster new ideas and new realities at a pace that we can barely imagine. We can already see how innovation and technology (both Aquarian ideas) are proceeding at a rapid pace.
The biggest influence in 2024 will be Pluto transiting into Aquarius, and then back through Capricorn once more before finishing the year in Aquarius where it will remain for nearly 20 years. There are no significant planetary alignments between the outer planets which typically incite major transitions, and the only planetary alignments other than the fast-moving planetary bodies is a conjunction of Jupiter (expansion) to Uranus (radical change). Jupiter also harmonizes with both Neptune and Pluto to assist in the process of acceleration of these transformative energies. To demonstrate how rare this is, the last time there were no planetary alignments between Saturn or the outer planets was 1987.
Just as we’ve seen over the past few years (see below for those details), there is no going back to the imagined safety and security of earlier times. We are moving quickly into a time where technology and innovation will continue to metamorphosize pretty much everything in human experience. We saw this when Pluto was last in Aquarius (1778-1798), a time which was characterized by a profound shift towards reason, science, and individual rights, influencing revolutions, scientific thought, economics, and social movements, laying the groundwork for the modern world. Once again we are being propelled into the future, and we can’t foresee our future any more than people could have imagined our lives today.
I know that many of you want to know about the election, and I will be preparing an Astrological State of the Union to coincide with the presidential address in January. And there is so much to say about the global conflicts which have risen in number in the past couple of years. The last time Pluto traveled through Aquarius was marked by revolutions, wars, and treaties, and notable alterations in the geopolitical landscape were the result. The United States was formed, of course, but Europe was altered significantly by the French Revolution with the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire and these change reverberated throughout the colonial realms as well.
I want to leave you with the idea that the brilliance of Aquarius specifically and the element of air generally offers a remarkable chance for profound personal insight and an extraordinary increase in wisdom. In order to achieve this, however, we have to be willing to expand the mind and be willing to break the old paradigms.
