Planetary news this week: Clear astrological skies for the Winter Solstice

Astrological update for the week of December 18-25, 2023

art from Scenic Alchemy

Sun enters Capricorn at the Winter Solstice. The wheel of the seasons turn on the cardinal signs – the signs of initiation and leadership. The solstice occurs at the moment the Sun enters the sign of Capricorn, and this year that takes place on December 21st EST/ December 22nd UTC. This is also the first day of winter (in the northern hemisphere).

The solstices and equinoxes are portals of energy and mark the extremes and balance […]

Planetary news this week: Jupiter enters Aries and the Capricorn Solstice

Astrological update for the week of December 19-26, 2022

There are two major transitions this week: The re-entry of Jupiter into Aries after its retrograde time in Pisces, and the entry of the Sun into Capricorn which marks the December solstice point which will be followed immediately by a Capricorn New Moon.

A time of change. We have been stuck in a myriad of global problems for the past several years – stuck under the Capricorn stellia (groupings of planets) with Saturn and Pluto, stuck in conflict under the Saturn/Uranus square. As […]

Astrological update for the week of December 20, 2021: Solstice, Christmas and the Limits of Freedom

art by Phoebe Wahl

Here’s what’s happening in the skies this week:

Saturn square Uranus. The final-ish square between Saturn (limits) and Uranus (liberation) occurs this week.  I’ve been calling this planetary combination “the story of 2021” and indeed it has been, thanks to the spread of Covid-19 around the world which has brought with it some peculiar re-alignments of ideas of control and freedom. Totalitarian influences which usually fall more on the side of control of society are now calling for liberation from Covid restrictions.  Liberal influences which typically rebel […]

12.21.20 Winter Solstice, and the astrological update for the week of December 21, 2020

There’s so much astrological news right now it’s difficult to pack it in, but I try. 😃  Winter Solstice, the conjunction of Jupiter to Saturn in Aquarius, etc. etc. etc.  Also, Mars squares Pluto this week one final time and we’ll need to watch out for power conflicts and excessive aggression.  Take out your boxing gloves!   Also, of course, a forecast for the week ahead to help you be prepared and there’s a Christmas cameo of puppies because clickbait!  Transcript is below.

Sunday poetry for the Winter Solstice

Long dark mornings gradually awaken to frost covered landscapes
Green fields now hardened rock, trees with their cast iron fingers pointing
Accusingly at grey overcasts skies, clouds pregnant with water to fall as snow
Lights from house lined streets their a golden glow cascading before them.
A damp dark day filled with a monotonous languor that drags from morning to dusk.
The High Street fills with Christmas shoppers, Christmas lights garnishing a tree
Blinking red, gold, silver baubles, flickering lights beckon children pointing, tugging
At their mother’s hand.

Dusk filled streets […]

The meaning of the Winter Solstice

art by Wendy Andrews

For millenia, the December solstice has been celebrated in the northern hemisphere as the time of the return of the Sun. Called Yule in the Celtic lands and Shab-e-Yalda by Persians, among others, the return of the Sun was worshiped as a god -in the Celtic lands the Oak King was the resurrected god, and in Persia it was Yalda, or Mithras.  In Rome the celebrations of Saturnalia and Sol Invictus was celebrated on December 25th, […]

Planetary news this week! The Winter Solstice turns the wheel

photo from Anthony Murphy

The planetary energies are relatively quiet this week and mostly benevolent.  The effect of Jupiter in a harmonious trine to Uranus which culminated last week still lingers for another week or so.  With no other major planetary alignments to dilute the effect of this wonderful trine, we can create real magic. Jupiter’s expansive influence can help us to more easily receive the multidimensional consciousness that Uranus bestows when we can become unstuck from our outmoded thoughts and ideas.

Between the 18th and the 20th we […]

All hail the Cancerian Full Moon at the Winter Solstice!

The astrological Solstice occurs when the Sun enters Capricorn (for my Southern Hemisphere friends this is actually the Summer Solstice).  Solstices and Equinoxes are important energetic gateways having to do with the balance of light and darkness.  At the Winter Solstice, the days are at their shortest and as humans we are pulled inwards into deep soul reflection.

The astrology of the Solstice Full Moon

This year, a Full Moon at zero degrees Cancer marks the entry of the Sun into Capricorn.  The Full Moon is the height of the lunar cycle – the lunar […]

The Winter Solstice and the return of the light: today!!

Winter Solstice astrology Deviant Art

The Winter Solstice is upon us: the day when the Sun enters Capricorn in the tropical zodiac. We have already talked about Saturn having just entered Capricorn, and Saturn and the Sun align today as well.

The chart for the Winter Solstice is often used to forecast the energies of the coming season (until the Spring Equinox at zero Aries).  The conjunction of the Sun to Saturn at the Winter Solstice embeds this energy into the energy of the season, bringing our attention away from relaxation […]

Winter Solstice, Mercury retrograde, and Pluto Pluto Pluto

Winter Solstice 2016Dear friends, I have neglected you terribly and there is so much to catch up on.

First of all – Mercury has turned retrograde (December 19th through January 8th) so all of the usual warnings apply.  Of course I have been wildly disregarding my own advice and doing lots of online shopping to catch the holiday sales.  We’ll see how that turns out!

Mercury retrograde periods, especially this time of year, are excellent for reflection – for looking back at the past year to see what changes we would […]
