Solar Maximum and global warming

solar maximumIt seems pretty much everyone agrees now that the earth is warming, and the extreme weather over the past week certainly seems to confirm that both the weather AND the climate is changing.  Steven Forrest’s July newsletter included an article about the current Solar Maximum which reminded me that I haven’t written on this topic for quite awhile.  Steven links to a chapter in his book The Night Speaks which discusses the research of Aleksandr Leonidovich Chizhevsky who divided the sunspot cycle into four phases that correlate to human behavior:

Phase […]

Wow: a big solar eruption

http://youtu.be/KsSqCN57fAM The sun has been very active over the past few years; as I wrote in August 2010 the prolonged “solar minimum” period meant that the maximum period which follows would be delayed somewhat beyond the predicted 2012 date. Solar cycles tend to last anywhere between 9 and 14 years, but they average about 11 years. Most astronomers now say that the current solar maximum cycle will peak in late 2013, thereby relieving the stress of doomsday predictions which suggest that a breakdown of the electrical grid could cause the predicted end of the world in 2012.

Much ado about Comet Elenin

Comet EleninOver the past few months I have read lots of exciting news about Comet Elenin – that it could be the Blue Star Kachina of the Hopi Prophecy, heralding the end times, or that it is actually Planet X, the Nibiru of Zechariah Sitchin fame that comes close to Earth every 3600 years.  Or that the Comet Elenin was a Brown Dwarf star headed for a collision of earth in September of 2011, ready to extinguish life on earth as we know it.

Despite the frenzy of fearmongering and misinformation, […]

Solar news

Spaceweather is reporting that a new sunspot created a C-class solar flare.  Normally this would not be much to write home about, but since we’re in the middle of the deepest solar minimum in 100 years, a solar flare is a big event!
