Punkie night!

Punkie NightBeth Owl’s Daughter reminds us that tonight is “Punkie Night,” an ancient celebration from Somerset England which is celebrated by the carving of pumpkin-like mangolds.   Beth writes, “Throughout Somerset, locals use the term “spunky” to refer to Will-o-the-Wisps — a ball of light seen at night rising up from a marsh or bog.”  In Christianized England these “spunkies” were thought to be the souls of unbaptized children who wandered eternally through the night, but the pagans saw spunkies as being trickster sprites; the carved […]

Crop Circles in Brazil

Crop circles don’t have anything to do with astrology, and perhaps they have no place in an astrology blog. But I love a good mystery (my Mercury is in Scorpio – there!  I made an astrological connection).
From Professor A.J. Gevaerd, via Colin Andrews:

[O]n October 29th, in the same town of Ipuaçu, by a few miles from the precise spot here last year’s circles have been found, […]

Crop circles are getting weirder

Some conspiracy theorists speculate that crop circles are being made by satellite transmitters that have been programmed with mind control messages.  That seems rather far out until you read this:

The 2009 crop circle ‘season’ started with abundance and now looks set to bring a summer of circles to Britain’s fields.
Whether made by human hands or an altogether different life form, no less than 20 formations have been spotted since the season began in April. This week alone two huge designs have mysteriously surfaced.

An intricate 150ft dragonfly appeared in a barley field near Yatesbury, Wiltshire, just days after a jellyfish design […]

New crop circle found August 8, 2008

This crop circle was found at 5:30 am.  The Crop Circle Connector field report seems to suggest that it was made using mechanical means, but it’s a fascinating image nonetheless.

Harold Stryderight tells us that the figure 8 refers to the upcoming lunar eclipse:

Each big circle of balls of increasing size shows an almost complete lunar phase cycle of 22 days (where the full number equals 29.5). Then 14 or 15 small “spikes” between balls tell […]

The Barbury Crop Circle and the Magic of Pi

Barbury crop circleI found this link on Ellie’s World about the new crop circle in Barbury, England that includes a very detailed analysis of the crop circle and its relationship to the number Pi and has rounded up to an astonishing 10 digits. This is a very precise measurement, and its difficult to imagine that two drunk guys with boards on their feet (the classic debunking of crop circles) could dream this up. I’m no mathematician, but the mathematical precision of this crop circle seems pretty amazing.

Pi is the ratio of […]
