Planetary news this week: Cancer New Moon and the Nodes change signs

Astrological update for the week of July 10-17, 2023

The lunar nodal axis shift. The changing of the Nodes of the Moon from one sign to the previous sign is an interesting pattern which suggests a revisiting of the past in order to move more fully into the future. The Nodes of the Moon are actually points in the sky rather than physical bodies; they mark the intersection of the orbit of the Moon with the orbit of the Sun and the crossing point between the consciousness of incarnation (Sun) and the subconscious instincts […]

Astrological news this week: Watery realms under the Cancer New Moon and Neptune station

Astrological update for the week of June 27-July 4, 2022

Elemental Water

Neptune stations retrograde.  The role of Neptune is to inspire the transcendence of ordinary life and ascension into a more illuminated experience of creative inspiration. Under its influence Spirit blossoms into the material world. Neptune is associated with experiences that bring spiritual bliss, but idealism and imagination can also bring confusion and self-deception if we’re not aware. Neptune’s role in the astrological pantheon, in my opinion, is to encourage us to seek out experiences which teach […]

7.10.21 Weekend Update – The New Moon continues to blossom today

art by Margaret Barry

Think about a New Moon as being like the bud of a flower which is just ready to open.  The moment of the astrological New Moon, the conjunction of the Sun and Moon, is the pregnant pause just before the bud begins to blossom.  Today the new beginning promised by the New Moon begins to unfold as the Moon completes her journey through her own sign of Cancer.  Today is the perfect day to center our attention on the heart and see what it […]

7.9.21 – The New Moon in Cancer brings the heart into focus

art by Jessica Durant

The New Moon offers an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and begin anew, and in Cancer we find ourselves discovering a depth of emotion that we may have ignored in the past: the heart of wisdom. Ruled by the Moon itself, Cancer rules the inner world – our feelings, our desire to nurture and be cared for, our tribal identifications such as to family or country.  The heart connection forged by the sign of Cancer brings us more deeply into self-awareness and connection, which […]

Second New Moon in Cancer featuring the Comet Neowise

photo from Nunzio Micale, via David Crook

On July 20th we have a New Moon in Cancer, the second concurrent Cancerian New Moon.  This is fairly unusual and can only happen when the first New Moon is at the very early degrees of a sign, with the second coming 28 degrees later.  The New Moon is the beginning of a new lunar cycle, and typically the New Moon progresses through the signs each year along with the Sun so we tend to go from Aries at or […]

The significance of the Solar Eclipse at the June Solstice

art by Robin Mead

I posted a portion of this article on my Facebook page.

Summer may begin on June 21st in the northern latitudes, and winter for my friends down under, but the June Solstice occurs when the Sun enters Cancer in the tropical zodiac.  This year’s June solstice occurs on June 20, 2020 at 5:43 pm EDT and will be followed shortly thereafter, at 2:41 am EDT on June 21st, by a solar eclipse at the New Moon in Cancer.  For thousands […]

Cancer Supermoon Eclipse! July 12, 2018

Cancer New MoonThe Cancer New Moon on the 12th is a Supermoon and a partial solar eclipse.  The term Supermoon (™ astrologer Richard Nolle) simply means that the Moon is at its closest point to the Earth.  When the Moon is full and a Supermoon it appears large in the sky.  When the Supermoon is a New Moon, we can’t see it at all because the light of the Sun obscures the Moon.  When the New Moon is an eclipse, the Sun is obscured as well.

The symbolism of an eclipse is […]

This New Moon in Cancer, June 2014

Cancer New Moon 2014The New Moon in Cancer takes place at 4:08 am on June 27th – the beginning of a new lunar cycle that takes us into a journey of exploration into the ways in which we connect with the people around us.

The sign Cancer brings us in touch with our family roots, but “family” can be defined in many different ways.  Most narrowly, “family” is defined as a group of related individuals living in a household together.  But family is widely defined as “a group of people sharing a […]

New Moon in Cancer, July 18/19th 2012. Prepare to be revealed!

Cancer new moon 2012 We have had a couple of intense weeks between the square between Uranus and Pluto (discussed in numerous places on this blog) and a strong influence of Mars setting off a series of planets over the past week or so. This intensity is embedded in the chart of the New Moon in Cancer on the 19th (18th in any time zone west of Eastern time).

The New Moon offers an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and begin anew, and in Cancer we find ourselves discovering emotional depth […]

New Moon in Cancer

The past few days have been a particularly powerful time, with the Summer Solstice (with the Sun entering the tropical sign of Cancer) on Sunday and the New Moon yesterday occurring only a day apart.  This links the energy of the change of season that the Solstice brings to the sense of new beginnings of the Cancer New Moon.

Cancer of course is the sign of the family and nurturing those we love, but it also extends to our ancestors, our tribal affiliations, the inheritance of our clan.  Many of us have chosen our own clan and have created new family […]
