The Mayan calendar is usually said to end on December 21, 2012, but that date seems to have little relevance to the actual Mayan calendar, although it has come to bear great mythological significance for the current age. According to that great source of modern wisdom Wikipedia:

This astronomical event is a bit like an eclipse in that Venus will obscure a portion of the Sun during this transit event. Venus transits come in pairs, and the first of the current pair occurred in 2004. With all due respect to the late Sathya Sai Baba, who was a controversial guru beloved by many before he died this spring, this recent interview with him shows an exceptional ignorance about the cycles (and lack of them) that are tied into the 2012 phenomenon. (
