solar eclipseToday’s New Moon in Capricorn is the first eclipse of the year: a partial Solar Eclipse in which the light of the Moon blocks out the Sun.  This eclipse occurs with five planets (including the Sun and Moon) all in the practical and grounded sign of Capricorn.

Though a solar eclipse typically brings out the heightened emotions of the Moon as the solar conscious principle is blocked by the lunar influence which is more reactive, this Capricorn New Moon is all about creating a new foundation which is solid and well balanced.  Any eclipse carries with it a heightened energy which can be utilized for creation and for personal transformation – we can see this energy at work in the fact that eclipses are usually associated with powerful weather events.

That is particularly true of this eclipse – though it is a partial eclipse, the Sun and Moon are aligned with Pluto, planet of destruction and rebirth.  Capricorn can be somewhat ruthless in its efforts to create a solid structure, setting aside personal emotions for the sake of the greater goals.  As in any eclipse, the Sun and Moon are also aligned with the lunar nodes, and in this case the North Node is in the sensitive nurturing sign of Cancer.  This Cancer North Node urges us not to forget the feelings and needs of those around us while we concentrate on our plan.

Fortunately, a Grand Trine of water (emotion and sensitivity) link Venus (relating and interpersonal connection) with Chiron (wounding and healing) and the Cancer North Node. Keep in mind that eclipse energies typically build for about three days before the event and take about three days to subside.   Finding this emotional balance within as we put the grounded energy of Capricorn to use will help us to integrate all of the energies of this eclipse in a beautiful way!
