Over the years I have studied a great deal of correlations between historical events and the associated planetary configurations. Often there are clear connections that are easily described. The conjunction of Uranus (radical change) to Pluto (destruction and regeneration) in the mid to late 1960s is one example – it’s easy to see how this planetary combination correlated with the dramatic social upheavals during that decade. Same thing with the square aspect between Uranus and Pluto between 2010 and 2017.
To prepare for this article I wanted to see what other astrologers said about the Coronavirus. Several astrologers say “this is definitely the result of Uranus in Taurus,” creating sudden changes (Uranus) in the stability of our world (Taurus). One says “it’s the lunar nodes shifting into Gemini/Sagittarius” (by the way, this doesn’t happen until May 2020). One says it’s because Mars was in Scorpio when the first case was announced, and Mars rules death in traditional astrology and is in its domicile where it is most powerful. Frankly, none of these explanations really make sense to me.
For the past year I and many other astrologers have been predicting some sort of crisis to occur when Saturn and Pluto collided in January. Neptune has been in its own sign of Pisces since 2012, where it is associated with flooding, addiction, conspiracy theories, and mysterious illnesses with no apparent cause or cure. We are certainly seeing this with the Coronavirus. Where did it originate? How is it transmitted? There is no known answer to these questions – all very Neptunian. At the same time, Saturn and Pluto converged in mid-January of this year, on the exact date that the first death from the mysterious new virus was announced (the illness began to appear in Wuhan in December as the two planets were approaching the exact conjunction). A Saturn/Pluto conjunction was present just before the Spanish Flu of 1917-1919 (which also correlated with a conjunction of Saturn to Neptune), and the Sars epidemic of 2003-2005 correlates with an opposition of Saturn in Gemini to Pluto in Sagittarius. It makes sense that this would have been a more fleeting event since Gemini and Sagittarius are active signs associated with quick movement.
In any case, we can’t forget that Pluto is in the sign of Capricorn which rules the material world. Pluto correlates with Shiva – the destroyer and Lord of the Dance – he has the potential to destroy and clear away the old so that the new can be reborn in the dance of life. Coronavirus has the potential to accelerate the work of Pluto’s travels through Capricorn which are almost complete – Pluto will begin its shift into Aquarius in 2023-2024 – but either Jupiter (expansion) or Saturn (compression) will travel closely with Pluto throughout 2020. I believe it is likely that this virus will have the effect of forcing a readjustment of global financial and governmental structures to better suit an evolving world.
Expected the conjunction on Jan 12th to shift something in our lives, but didn’t think it would be a black swan event like the coronavirus. Wondering what affect the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in Dec 2020 will have or may bring things to a conclusion? We have that Pluto return as well in 2024. I guess all we can do is emanate positive vibrations and be present. Thank you always for your articles. Love reading them.
Thanks Sally – of course it’s impossible to predict exactly what will happen. The Universe is always striving for balance, and life on planet Earth has strayed far from anything resembling a balance. Jupiter will be pretty closely aligned with Pluto for much of the year, so I am expecting some difficulties and this Coronavirus seems to be the instigator.
Hi Lynn:
There was a Saturn-Neptune conjunction in 1918; Saturn/Pluto conjunct was in 1915 or 1916 depending on width of aspect. Of course we don’t know exactly when Spanish Flu began. The first record was said to have been in Fort Riley, 4th March, 1918.
Finbarr
Hi Finbarr, according to Wikipedia: “In late 1917, military pathologists reported the onset of a new disease with high mortality that they later recognized as the flu.” And you’re right, the Saturn/Neptune conjunction was August 1, 1917. I’m going to revise the post accordingly.
I just happened to read this article about the 1918 flu in the Smithsonian. It goes into great detail about the development and origins. https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/journal-plague-year-180965222/
Thanks Daisy, that was an interesting article.
[…] third article here https://www.lynnhayes.com/musings-on-the-coronavirus/ from Lynn […]
Thanks Lynn, I really appreciate your thoughts on this event we are experiencing globally. I shared your article in my recent newsletter at the full moon. I really agree with your thoughts on the Saturn/Pluto conjunction and the connection as well. I place the Uranus / Taurus as more related to markets, currencies and even food distribution and food-related businesses having greater volatility, and earth movements like earthquakes and volcanoes (such as when it first went into the sign of Taurus, indeed that is playing out too. I think the ripple effects of this virus outbreak will be long-lasting. If you have not seen the article yet that L. Lee Lehman has written for mundane astrology on the subject I think you would like it too. Thanks again, as usual, solid astrological considerations on the archetypes (with historical notes) for this post.

Thanks Sarah, and of course you’re right about Uranus in Taurus creating uncertainty. It’s also interesting that the astromapping of the Saturn/Pluto conjunction fell right on the area of China where the outbreak occurred. It’s always easier to look back and see correlations than to look forward and predict, however.
L Lee Lehman article sounds interesting. Where can it be found?
I found Lee’s article here: https://leephd.blogspot.com/2020/03/coronavirus-notes.html.
Dr. Lee Lehman has done a video too – find it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecvBMC2GnaM&fbclid=IwAR0RoOThf3V1dJJA6o5CuM6g7NTmUscsEJOvq1_FXeGtI6m_kMfhsiRaRU4&app=desktop
Hi Lynn,
I was very interested to read your article on the significators of the coronavirus – thank you! I thought you might be interested In the ideas of top British financial astrologer Christeen Skinner who predicted the recent outbreak in her book – ‘Navigating the Financial Universe : prospering and preparing for the challenges ahead’ (p92-3), (which I was reading at the time you sent out your article!) She says that the planetary ‘signatures’ of each outbreak of disease vary a great deal, but a common one at the start of epidemics appears to be a major aspect between Pluto and Chiron. With Pluto in Capricorn and Chiron in Aries these bodies are in square signs at the moment but will not form an exact square aspect to one another. They do however form what Christeen says is ‘an arguably more significant aspect’- a quintile in Feb 2020. She also talks about the ‘Trans-Neptunian’ planetary bodies orbiting beyond Pluto which include Hades, and notes that between 2020 and 2022 Chiron will be in square aspect to Hades, just as they were in 1917 (onset of the Spanish flu contagion). Hope this is of interest!
Thank you for all your articles! I have been especially interested in reading and learning more about the other candidates standing in your upcoming elections!
Thanks for your comment, Julie. Hades is a fast moving asteroid – it moves more quickly than commonly used asteroids such as Pallas and Ceres and with an orbit more like Mercury it’s difficult to see how it would be significant in a major crisis like the Coronavirus. Others have mentioned Hygeia as a factor which does have a longer orbit, a little over five years. But I tend to think that major events correlate with major planets and asteroids.
I think an evaluation of planetary cycles present during epidemics deserves its own post, I suspect we will find that there isn’t a particular cycle that stands out for each event.
Thank you so much for this beautiful article. Do you have any astrological Insite on 5G in this time?
5G is part of the transition into the Aquarian Age and the interconnectivity between humans and machines. Terrence McKenna called this the “Singularity.” I’m not going to get into the conspiracy theory that 5G has caused the coronavirus, and you shouldn’t either. There is plenty of darkness in the world, we don’t need to be chasing after darkness that doesn’t exist.
Thank you very much! I greatly appreciate your speedy response.
He passed away on April 3, 2020
who did?
This will not end well. We are moving into a NWO where socialism reigns. I’m an Aquarius Sun but I resent it deeply because while it seems utopian on the surface, it will ultimately contradict freedom. The world at large won’t realize what a trojan horse it is until the end of the Pluto in Aquarius transit when the technocrats who will be the primary managers of this globalist agenda, ultimately meet their demise and the fallacy that it was ever tenable revealed. Then all hell will break loose as Pluto enters the murky, nightmarish waters of Pisces and the Catholic Church is exposed once and for all…Shudder
Brandon, while I agree with you that this won’t end well in that the breakdown of society won’t be a happy situation for many, I disagree that we are moving into a world where socialism will prevail. I think we saw during the Democratic primary that this idea is untenable for the US, and nations around the world are moving more towards the right than the left. Still, Aquarius is ruled by Saturn and the collective takes precedence over the personal. The last time Pluto was in Aquarius, 1777-1797, marked an age of unprecedented revolution and social upheaval.
