We might look at Jupiter and Saturn as the two planets which help us to interact with the outer world. Unlike the other planets which describe the inner personality, Jupiter and Saturn describe the way we reach for the future with our hopes and dreams (Jupiter) and begin to master the material world (Saturn). Jupiter helps us to craft theologies and beliefs that help to give our life meaning and gives us the confidence to venture into the future; Saturn reminds us that hard work and adversity is the way to build strength and skill.

In a natal chart, this dynamic can cause a stress point between confidence in one’s abilities (Jupiter) and a fear of failure (Saturn).  As a current planetary dynamic, its effect is more universal. With the challenging or strong square (90º) alignment, the force of expansion and positivity is hampered by the contracting force of Saturn to doubt and second-guess.

During the first phase of this planetary cycle (August 19, 2024) Mercury and Saturn are both retrograde so this tendency to look back and reevaluate will be even more pronounced. In addition, Mars begins to get involved  and translates the square beginning around August 15th when the two bigger players are about a degree apart.

During this time we may all experience the fear of failure more intensely, and making big decisions of change may become more problematic (the degree to which this occurs will depend on our individual charts), but the influence of Mars applies pressure for change. Mars doesn’t easily take no for an answer, and mistakes will be made.

In 2024 there are very few planetary alignments other than the quick moving ones, so this dynamic may stand out more intensely than it normally would. Both planets are in mutable signs where confusion can be more pronounced, which could intensify the issue. Jupiter in Gemini tends to waffle and perhaps think too much without focus but needs air and space to breathe and expand. Saturn in Pisces can be fearful of the murky mists of uncertainty, especially when retrograde.

This square aspect is ameliorated by the fact that Saturn is in a sign ruled by Jupiter so there is some affinity which helps the two to work together. Still, there is a lack of clarity that will need to be managed and this will not be easy for the reasons described here.

This is a time for thoughtful reflection and planning. Use Jupiterian optimism to craft big plans of freedom from restraint and an increase in abundance. Use Saturnian realism to carefully look for any holes in your plan which could create problems later on. Use the fire of Mars to generate enthusiasm and excitement while at the same time trying to harness any reckless behavior. And finally, remember that Mercury is retrograde and be mindful of communication errors or decisions made in haste.

The second phase of this triphase cycle occurs December 24th, with the final phase in this cycle in June of 2025 at which point both Jupiter and Saturn will have changed signs and will be in cardinal signs of action.

Jupiter and Saturn don’t have to be enemies, and they offer great potential for success if we honor them both in equal measure. This is a good time to learn to respect the gifts of Saturn!
