“Horoscopes May Be Bad for You”

Image from Telegraph article

Just when I start to think that astrology is gaining respect in the mainstream an article like this comes along that shows how newspaper predictions are still confused with astrology:

Astrology may seem like harmless fun – but a new study suggests following your star sign could be bad for you.

Consumers who read their horoscope daily were found to be more likely to exhibit impulsive or indulgent behaviour when their zodiac was negative, the research suggested.

Already this article in the Telegraph is all kinds of wrong.  First of […]

It’s true: Astrology can’t predict the state of your marriage

astrology compatibilityFirst, there is not an astrologer in the world today that makes prediction on marriage success using sun signs.  Thanks to the Internet there is enough information available to the general public about astrology to educate everyone that astrology involves far more than just the sign the Sun was in at the time of your birth.

So I am very surprised that if an academic institution like the University of Manchester was going to conduct an in-depth study on the effectiveness of astrology on predicting marriage duration, that they used sun […]

“Confessions of a horoscope writer” and why I’m not one

horoscopesSomeone posted this article on our astroblogger Facebook group:

Until recently, I had a dirty little secret. I write horoscopes. Or at least, I used to. Now it’s not such a dirty little secret because a) I’ve just told you and b) there aren’t that many horoscope clients left in my portfolio any more, anyway. But back in the day – oh yes. I was the BBC Slink teen astrologer for 13 years until the site closed last year and provided daily teen horoscopes throughout that time. […]

UK Researcher says “seasonal interference” is not astrology

birth month determines careerRussell Foster, a researcher with Oxford University in the UK, has uncovered a correlation between birth month and career path.

According to researchers, a child born in December is more likely to become a dentist while someone whose birthday falls in January is more likely to become a debt collector. Those babies born in February are likely to turn their hand to painting, while March babies go on to become pilots.

Speaking earlier this year, neuroscientist Russell Foster from Oxford University says: ‘The effects are small but very, very […]

Astrology and the Forer Effect

astrology skepticHere is an interesting article about an experiment performed in 1948 by Bertram R. Forer who collected statements from sun sign columns and then presented them to his subjects as though they were personally assessed as part of a personality profile.  Note: “horoscopes” are not sun sign forecasts, the horoscope is the actual map of the sky at a given time – the astrological chart, if you will.

These statements include the following:

You have a need for other people to like and admire you, and yet you tend to be […]

This is why Sun Sign astrology doesn’t work

A reader writes:

I was born under the sign of LEO. I think I have two other planets in LEO. I can tell you that I am far from a LEO. In areas that I should be strong because of my LEO traits, I am often handicapped by fear/anxiety. At times I think I strongly identify more with Virgo than LEO. I was wondering if you could tell what else in my chart that would account for this and if there is anything I can do to achieve the most positive aspects of LEO to the fullest.

This guy, let’s call him […]

More on Sun Signs and the Olympics

Astrological Signs

Yesterday we introduced the work of statistician Kenneth Mitchell’s analysis of the correlation of certain astrological signs with sports that correspond to those signs.

Moving on to Taurus – Mitchell learned of a sport called Bull Leaping and from the pictures deduced that Pole Vaulting and gymnasts would have similar skills.  Taurus, of course, is symbolized by the bull.  Mitchell found that those born under the Taurus Sun sign had a 128% greater chance of winning medals in these […]

Astrology: Misunderstood, disrespected

I love finding quirky little articles that “debunk” astrology and posting them here. Like this one:

Think there’s no harm in astrology? Click around and you’ll find cases such as that of Myanmar’s former prime minister, General Ne Win, who decided to issue the nation’s currency in denominations of 45 and 90 and other multiples of nine, a number his astrologer said was his lucky number. The move immediately made citizens poorer […]

A rigorous astrology study – another “horoscope” rant

Here is a questionnaire from a sincere questioner who would like to determine whether astrology has any validity, but their only knowledge of astrology is from the “astrology” columns on the comics page. The only problem is – sun sign astrology will not hold up under any kind of scrutiny, much less something this well thought out. So we’ll end up with yet another curious seeker who never takes that next step to discover the real magic of astrology.

Some of you have written in support of “horoscopes,” telling me that they lead people on a quest […]

Another failure of Sun Sign astrology

I could probably be a lot more famous if I was willing to write a Sun Sign column. I don’t know why I’m so stubborn, without newspaper horoscopes hardly anyone would even know about astrology. And after writing the Vanity Fair horoscope column for at least 15 years Michael Lutin is finally getting to write about real astrology.

But articles like this (thanks to the Townleys for the link) show that sun signs have little effect on our ability to make any kind of reasonable predictions using astrology.

Last month a magazine from Jordan contacted me to write a “horoscope” article for […]
