The Millennial Generation

We’ve been talking in these pages about the generational impacts of this year’s presidential election, including the early boomers (Pluto in Leo), late boomers and generation X (Pluto in Virgo) and generation Y (Pluto in Libra). Each group as a generation carries the impulses of the sign that Pluto was in. But there is another generation, commonly considered to have born since 1982, that many writers are calling the Millennial generation, presumably because they came of age at the turn of the 21st century.

Pluto in Scorpio, the sign which it rules, brought with it the scourge of AIDS (death by […]

Obama, Early and Late Boomers, and Pluto generations

There are two articles in the latest Newsweek magazine that have inspired posts, so you’ll get one tomorrow about the end of the happiness craze. Today, though, I am excited about Jonathan Alter’s article about the battle between the Early Boomers versus the Late Boomers in the battle between Obama and Clinton.

Jill has been bemoaning just such a battle on her blog, where cohorts from both generation are duking it out over the Democratic candidates. The fact is, the Boomers that get the bad rap about being an admittedly self-indulgent and narcissistic generation […]

Hip replacement and the Baby Boomer generation

runnersI listened to part of a piece today on The Story, a newish show by the fabulous Dick Gordon who moved to Chapel Hill after his NPR show The Connection was taken off the air for being too controversial. Anyway… today’s show featured a segment called “Jane Fonda’s Legacy,” a story about the aerobics craze that began during the 1980s and continued into the 1990s, leaving many of us with shin splints, bad feet and sciatica worse than our mothers’.

Dick interviewed a former aerobics instructor named Carol Espel who taught […]

Teen suicide rates are up

suicide

WASHINGTON, Sept. 6, 2007-Following a decline of more than 28 percent, the suicide rate for 10- to-24-year-olds increased by 8 percent, the largest single-year rise in 15 years, according to a report released today in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention?s (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).

The decline took place from 1990 to 2003 (from 9.48 to 6.78 per 100,000 people), and the increase took place from 2003 to 2004, (from 6.78 to 7.32), the report said

“This is the biggest annual increase that we’ve seen in 15 years. We don’t […]

“Boomsday” is coming

Newsweek has a column by Robert Samuelson about the upcoming “Boomsday” – the time (projected to be 2011) when 77 million baby boomers begin hitting the age of 65 and demanding their social security payouts. Because of the nature of the Social Security system, it will be the Boomers’ children whose social security taxes are paying for their parents’ retirement.

Many social critics anticipate a “generational backlash” when taxes have to be raised to accommodate the burgeoning Social Security program, and this dovetails nicely with the upcoming square of Uranus in Aries (revolution for individual rights) to Pluto […]

Generation Next: The Saturn/Uranus influence

A column by David Brooks the other day intrigued me when he wrote about students he taught at Duke University last fall, calling them “Children of Polarization”:

Today’s college students, remember, were born around 1987. They were 2 or 3 when the Berlin Wall fell. They have come into political consciousness amid impeachment, jihad, polarization and Iraq. Many of them seem to have reacted to these hothouse clashes not by becoming embroiled in the zealotry but by quietly drifting away from that whole political mode.

::snip::

For many students, the main axis of their politics is not […]

Baby Boomers: A Faustian Bargain

Drawing by David Michael Friend

While we’re on the subject of the sign of Leo, let’s talk about the Pluto in Leo generation. My friend Jon sent me this article:

My cohort of early baby boomers has been called a lot of names in its nearly six decades of existence—we were the insolent teenagers of the 1950s; the self-centered Yuppies of the 1980s; now we are the aging spendthrifts who will bust the federal budget and bankrupt our children with unreasonable demands for creature comfort in old age.

But maybe it would be more appropriate […]
