The Cancer New Moon on the 12th is a Supermoon and a partial solar eclipse. The term Supermoon (™ astrologer Richard Nolle) simply means that the Moon is at its closest point to the Earth. When the Moon is full and a Supermoon it appears large in the sky. When the Supermoon is a New Moon, we can’t see it at all because the light of the Sun obscures the Moon. When the New Moon is an eclipse, the Sun is obscured as well.
The symbolism of an eclipse is connected to the Nodes of the Moon – points in the sky where the path of the Moon crosses the path of the Sun. Because the lunar nodes are connected to fate and destiny, eclipses do often have a fated quality and a sense that something in the life is being exposed or released.
All New Moons, whether an eclipse or not, are a time of new beginnings. The New Moon in Cancer seeks to connect us to our emotional roots – family, or the family that we create for ourselves. We cannot master the world (Cancer’s opposite sign of Capricorn) until we connect deeply to our emotional heart and allow it to soften rather than build up a crusty shell that defends us from hurt but also prevents the flow of love. This is one of the lessons of Cancer.
Another Cancerian lesson is that the past takes us to the future and cannot be avoided. Our history is our present, and both can be transformed.
This is a partial eclipse visibly and pretty far from the lunar nodes so weaker astrologically – but it is a powerful astrological event nonetheless. The New Moon is exactly opposite Pluto, the planet of complete and total transformation. All of the planets that are retrograde right now are dredging up some spiritual and psychological detritus, and there is a sense that all of this stuff can be completely transformed under this New Moon. Pluto is intense and can bring confrontation and power conflicts, especially since the Cancerian New Moon is deeply sensitive on the emotional level.
Fortunately, a harmonious Grand Trine in earth signs (Venus in Virgo, Uranus in Taurus and Saturn in Capricorn will help us to find balance and smooth the way towards a more comfortable transformation.
This transformation is facilitated by a harmonious Venus aspect on the 14th that aids in repairing and stabilizing our connections with others.
