Astrology gets a bad rap for being unable to reliably predict the future. The fact is, while astrology reveals the underlying order of things, it does not reveal the future. Through astrology we can know when there is potential for difficulty, but everyone experiences these cycles differently, and they are experienced differently at different times.
As I write this today at the end of November, I have just found out that a brilliant astrologer that I have worked with over the years, Dawn Bodrogi, just died. In her last news letter she wrote that her mother had recently died just after a New Moon in the progressed chart, and Dawn had a New Moon in the progressed chart at the time of her death. A client recently also had a New Moon in the progressed chart at the time of death.
When we think of New Moons, death is not the first thing we predict! A New Moon marks a new beginning – the old way is falling away as the lunar phase wanes to pave the way for a new start at the New Moon. Often there is a fundamental change at the core of our being, or a move to a new location.
In my own chart, Jupiter (beliefs and meaning) is in a powerful square to Pluto (power and intensity). This dynamic typically suggests someone who holds on tightly to their belief system, and there is a self-righteous quality to it. When I have a strong feeling about something, my confidence in that belief never wavers. 98% of the time this confidence is well-placed and serves me well. But when we are so rigid in our beliefs and what we think we know, there is no room for expansion and the opportunity for our understanding to blossom.
The Scorpio New Moon hit this dynamic in my chart, and ever since then I have been questioning everything that I know to be true which has left me feeling a bit lost at sea. But in letting go of the things I know, there is an opening for a higher level of understanding and growth to come in.
I have my own New Moon in the progressed chart last month just a week after my birthday, so it’s locked into the Solar Return chart for the next year. At the same time, Pluto, the planet of death and regeneration, will be sitting on my Sun for virtually the entire year. Perhaps this means I will leave my physical body, but it’s more likely that I will not. This is what makes astrological prediction impossible, and while astrologers keep trying (see also: Astrologers predict 2016 election results) they are not often successful no matter how ancient or esteemed the techniques used.
The presence of a New Moon in the progressed chart at death does not make me doubt the astrological symbolism. Instead it suggests that our concepts of life and death need to be expanded. Often I have clients in the midst of terrible crisis who later find that after the irrevocable breakdown of their lives during that time led to a powerful transformation that changed them in positive ways. We cannot know, but perhaps the signification of the New Moon at the time of death reveals a transition into a new experience of the soul, and a new awakening.
Dear Lynne I have just read your recent blog The Falling Away of Things I Know to be true. I am not sure what is going on in my chart but I too have experienced a similar loss of faith. I just read that Doreen Virtue has become a Christian and is denouncing some of her cards and and books. It’s been a shock as I regularly watch her on YouTube giving an Angel reading! I found your article really helpful! Thankyou. Theresa
Thanks Theresa – life is all about change and sometimes that happens in ways that we don’t understand. Changing our deeply held belief systems can be traumatic and difficult, but I am beginning to see that the more we think we know, the less we actually do!
I also had my pr New Moon just about a year ago now, and it’s felt like something of a new beginning after a very long, very dark period of a decade. But I’m still wrestling somewhat… (and Pluto is squaring my natal Sun–but I’m also not dying! Much to my surprise, I haven’t really felt this, but my solar return had a grand trine, the NN at the MC at the Regulus point. It’s finally been a better year. But I’m still wrestling somewhat… )
Are you able to talk a little about the process of the pr NM? I read that it can take a few years to get out from under that new-and-wobbly feeling… Like, 3. Any thoughts?
I hope you get an exciting new beginning!
90% of my readers are relative novices, and I try to stay away from anything too astrologically advanced. So rather than write specifically about the progressed New Moon, which most people will have trouble relating to, I like to sneak this kind of thing into other posts which I WILL do. Thanks for reading!
Thanks! I’ll continue reading your excellent posts!
I was so shocked and saddened to hear that Dawn Bodrogi had passed away. I believe it was through your blog Lynn that I first became aware of her tremendously insightful and in-depth writing on The Inner Wheel. Thankyou for that. My sincere condolences to Dawn’s loved ones, may she rest in peace.
Thank you Dotty. xoxox
Sending Reiki and prayers to Dawn Bodrogi’s family and friends.

Some things you’re not letting happen right now because the timing isn’t perfect for you. Some you’re not letting happen because you are very aware of where you are. But all things, as they are happening, are happening in perfect order. And if you will relax and begin saying, “Everything in its perfect time. Everything is unfolding. And I’m enjoying where I am now, in relationship to where I’m going. Content where I am, and eager for more,” that is the perfect vibrational stance.

November had quite an accelerating feel to it, December will feel similar. In general these months have an integration energy to them. This will begin in the subtle first and start coming into physical form over time. (I feel this in January as well). December asks us to renew and replenish within. The process of renewal is a blending of letting go and “taking” (action, decision, focus, fuel, etc.). The full flow of give and receive is a necessity in Life.
Renewal is what supports the blossoms to spring forth each year.
As you renew yourself, you are letting go of what doesn’t support your Light-ness of being, and you are finding the connections that support you shining forth.
Life Loves you unconditionally. You are magnificent, magnetic and majestic. Life is compelling you with deep Love to a greater version of Life. Can you feel the gravity of that? What a fun ride! Mostly. ;o) — Era of Light
Practice energetic clarity rather than self protection. Self protection announces there is something you need protection from. Dear Ones, you are a beloved Source energy. How can anything be stronger than that?
Energetic clarity is simply claiming your highest vibrational state & allowing it to shine, brightly, beautifully, & unimpeded. Self protection perpetuates separation and fear. Energetic clarity embraces your authentic power, stepping into your highest vibrational truth, supports presence & connection.
How to practice energetic clarity: Find a spark, in your centre that is the divine essence of you, or the Christ connected part of you, & allow that golden spark to grow & grow until it fills your entire body with beautiful, sparkling, golden light. Once you have your entire body filled, pull it out until it extends arm’s length in front of you, behind you, beside you, over your head, and under your feet. That’s all there is to it! -Trinity Esoterics
Thanks for this practice!
I, too, am deeply shocked and saddened to hear Dawn has passed away. I was taking a class from her and felt a deep connection to her. She had mentioned to me that progressed New Moon in Scorpio right on her progressed Ascendant and said to me, I wonder if I will die. In response I told her about my progressed New Moon in Virgo in my first natal house conjunct my Ascendant (5 degrees) and how it had been a extraordinary turnaround of my challenging health. I went on a cleanse, for several months actually, a few days after the New Moon was exact and my whole life was transformed by this–such a Virgo path!
I didn’t think Dawn would really die and I wonder what happened, though I knew her health was not good. I’m very sorry that she has left us. Blessings and light follow her on the path into the road beyond.
That’s so interesting Melody that she mentioned this to you. Was this after her mother had died? She was my go-to astrologer and I was in the process of scheduling a session with her when her cousin died back in September I think. She will really be missed.
Lynn, Dawn talked with me about her progressed New Moon conjunct her Ascendant on either the 13th or 15th of November when we were meeting for her progressions class and the New Moon was happening a few days later. We were going to have class again on the day after Thanksgiving, but she didn’t call me. I emailed her, but didn’t hear back–but I chalked it up to many family things going on, though I also did an internet search to see if there was some news about her. Nothing showed up then–but on the 30th of November the news came out.
I’m really missing her now–I really loved talking with her and learning from her. She was a very unique and amazing person.
Melody, thanks for posting this. Although I have been studying astrology for many years and working with clients since the mid-1980s, I learned a lot from Dawn. My style is more intuitive and flowy, and her double virgo attention to detail and methodology was very helpful to me. She was also the astrologer that I went to when I needed a reading, and I was in the process of scheduling something this fall. First her cousin died, I think that was September, and I believe her mother died in the summer. We were emailing back and forth to reschedule when I had an email from her brother. I have been downloading her articles from the web to preserve them and there are some people working to otherwise preserve her work. I’ll post more when I know more.
I agree that the New Moon represents a new awakening and that we don’t know precisely on what level that awakening happens. Sometimes I’ve thought about Scorpio and how it represent the kinds of experiences: birth, sex, death in which we shake loose powerful energy that take us to a different dimension, cracking open deeply established boundaries . . . All of these represent release into new possibilities and new states of being–I don’t think we can lose our deepest being.
When my Asc progressed to SCO a few years ago, I thought for sure that I would start to be paranoid, sneakier, etc., all the negative sides of Scorpio. But in fact, it really empowered me, and helped me to understand self-safety issues, as well as keep more and more away from draining situations.
Scorpio gets a bad rap but it IS the sign of empowerment under its Scorpio rulership. Everything that no longer serves us is stripped away and we are left with the essence of who we are, naked and new.
Totally off topic. but do you think the GOP Tax Plan will stand as passed? It’s during the Mercury Retrograde shadow phase, so I was amazed it went through.
Thanks-
Tamara
This is off-topic, but Tamara you know that Pluto is going through the second house (money) in the US chart so I am not expecting particularly positive things to happen. We are also heading into the Pluto Return (I have written on this and will write more) so I think we need to brace ourselves for some unpleasantness before it’s all over. With Mercury retrograde there is certain to be a great deal of re-negotiation and I would be surprised if the tax plan ends up in the same form as it is today.
Thank you for response Lynn. I pulled most of my money out of the market, even though everyone claims it was stupid, because I don’t think it’s going to stay high so much longer. Doesn’t Pluto also rule karmic debts?
Am looking forward to your future post(s) on Pluto and it’s effect on the Sibley chart.
I have been day-trading for 8 years and extensively studying the market.
In 2000 the market, economy, business, etc. went into a bear cycle. This cycle is low energy, low movement, low wages, etc. This year we moved into the bull cycle of growth and expansion. Each cycle last between 15 – 20 years. A broker said the market doubles every 10 years and the Dow should be at 28,000, and is playing catch-up now. Excluding astrology, the economy and market are in a growth period, with some pull backs.

Deb, this comment confuses me – the current bull market has been going on since 2010. What makes you say we moved into the bull cycle this year?
Astrology is a wonderful tool for finding your weaknesses and strengths. Astrology is a wonderful pathway in finding the roots of mythology and establishing each individuals truth. But to refer to astrology in finding a path and depending on this source in performing one’s journey and to establish ones’ decisions because of an aspect can be a bit ludicrous. we are all born of free will as Lynn Hayes suggested. Energies change. Individuals, on and on, will refer back to astrology because of their innate insecurities. This is not saying good or bad…..

I have a full natal 12th house stellium in Aries….Sun, Eris, Saturn, Moon, NN, andPisces Venus,Mercury,Vesta in the 11th opposite Pluto/Uranus.
I’m feeling my new moon in the 12th is an ending and a new beginning.
My progressed Moon is now at 3 degrees Aries. I’m going to go check when it will conjunct my progressed sun in Gemini!!
I had a reading with Dawn years ago. I just loved her. So sad she’s gone…..
