Part I: A look back at the past 20 years of Plutonic influence.
The return of Pluto, the planet of destruction and regeneration, to its place in the U.S. astrological chart has been a dramatic event that only occurs once every 248 years. Pluto returns in charts of nations and empires mark periods of great turmoil and change, and we have certainly seen that in the United States. The turmoil actually began long before the beginning of the Pluto return in early 2022:
-
- Pluto crossed the U.S. Sagittarius ascendant (the point which shows the style of action and the way the nation is viewed by others) in 1999 and 2000, just before the events of September 11, 2001 changed everything. This period was marked by the Columbine massacre, the first of the school shootings which have come to define our national trauma. President Bill Clinton was impeached. The 2000 presidential election was so close it was decided by the Supreme Court, leading many to believe it was an illegitimate presidency, something which has haunted every election since.
- Pluto, still in Sagittarius, opposed the U.S. Mars (conflict) in 2003-2005, leading to the invasion of Iraq and the war in Afghanistan. Pluto also squared U.S. Neptune (confusion and delusion) during this period and now, 20 years later, it is generally agreed that these wars were entered into under false pretenses and accomplished very little.
- Beginning in 2007-2008, Pluto squared the U.S. Midheaven – the point of highest aspiration and the noble goals of the nation. President Barack Obama was elected and then in 2008 Pluto entered Capricorn and facilitated the crash of inflated dreams and housing markets. The Pluto/Midheaven alignment continued into early 2010.
- Pluto then moved on to oppose the U.S. Venus (allies) and Jupiter (political philosophy) in 2009-2011, beginning the fracture of American politics that has only worsened since then. The Obama presidency unleashed a rift of racial resentment and unrest that continued to deepen over the next ten years and into today’s politics.
- Pluto’s opposition to the U.S. Sun in 2014-2015 brought with it the candidacy of Donald Trump and led us into the jaws of the U.S. Pluto return. The candidacy and presidency of Donald Trump with his openly expressed xenophobia opened the door to the dark Plutonic realms of the nation which are rooted in slavery and genocide.
This, my friends, is Pluto in action. Trump didn’t cause this to happen – together with Pluto, he opened the door to the circles of hell and the demons began to emerge from the underground of the U.S. psyche. The persona of the United States is marked by the sunny optimism of the Sagittarius ascendant that prefers to ignore the dark historical memory. Pluto’s role is to dig up the secrets and the black stain on our history and expose it, and it has certainly done its job over the past few years.
Part II – The Pluto Return and a look forward
Wow just wow
I know! 😳
Great to see this in historical perspective. Thank you
You’re very welcome Pat. Hindsight is always clearer than the future. 💖
As always, thank you for your insight.
You’re very welcome Paula. 🥰
I really enjoy reading your content and these articles around the US are especially enlightening. You have such an ability to distill the astrology into clear and accessible content. I am an Aussie and have the benefit of distance in observing and attempting to apply the astrology to the events, themes etc going on in the US. I wonder if you would be interested in assessing the Australian chart in light of Pluto in capricorn? Given you would then be in the position of observing from a distance, it would be really interesting to read your take on things. Australia has quite a few planets in capricorn in the 9th house, which of course has been receiving the plutonic treatment for the last decade or so. It is now in the first 6ish degrees of the 10th house. I would also be interested on your thoughts of using progressions for nation state charts? Again, thanks for your analysis, thoughts and observations – certainly a highlight for my astro reading week :-)
Hi Belinda, I have used progressions for national charts, such as here where I reviewed the progressed Sun in the US chart. This is part I and I think there are three parts: https://www.lynnhayes.com/the-progressed-sun-in-the-us-chart.
The 1901 chart of Australia shows the Sun/Saturn conjunction at 7-10 degrees Capricorn and the transit from Pluto would have been in 2010-2015 so it’s not very timely. I try to keep my articles relative to current events so they are interesting to a larger number of people. That said, the Uranus/Pluto square during that time period means that not only Pluto transited the Sun/Saturn but also Uranus made a square to that system.
thanks Lynn, I wasn’t expecting a retrospective of the Australian chart – was just mentioning that it had been hit by pluto for the last decade. Obviously more interested in what is going on now.
Thanks for the reply.
