Today I want to talk a little bit about Venus retrograde. Currently there are four planets retrograde: Pluto turned retrograde at the end of April, Saturn turned retrograde and the beginning of May I think was May 11. And then Venus and Jupiter both turned retrograde on the 13th. So I talked about all of that last week. If you missed it, you might want to go ahead and catch up. I wanted to talk a little bit about Venus retrograde because there’s a lot of beautiful symbology to it.
One thing that I find really interesting is Venus is retrograde for 40 days and 40 nights. And what’s interesting about that is the religious connotations, which in most of the major religions, there is something about 40 days for night’s the flood with Noah was 40 days 40 nights. Jesus went into the wilderness to pray for 40 days and 40 nights. And he was tempted by Satan. And an interesting thing about that is that another name for Satan supposedly, is Lucifer. Lucifer is also called the Light Bringer and the Morning Star and Venus when she’s visible in the sky in the morning is also called the Morning Star.
So all of this symbology sort of all melds together. Moses and the ancient Hebrews wandered in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights and Buddha meditated for 40 days and 40 nights before he reached somebody. So this idea of Venus, the cycle of Venus is very symbolic and of course, in ancient times Venus was the most visible of all the planets. Venus is the brightest star in the sky. I suppose you could say that Jupiter is also bright but Venus I think is more visible because it’s closer. Venus is known as the morning star when she is ahead of the sun in the sky. So when you’re looking at the astrological chart when Venus is counterclockwise to the sun, which is how the planets move in the chart, then Venus is known as the morning star and when Venus is behind the sun, she rises in the evening and then she’s known as the evening star.
There’s some other symbology about the planet Venus so Venus before she was called Venus by the Romans, and Aphrodite by the Greeks. She was also a goddess in ancient Sumerian and Babylon. And all of those Middle Eastern countries where she was called in Inana, Ishtar, Astarte. And you might remember somebody called Asherah from the Old Testament – supposedly she was the consort of Jehovah. All the same goddess archetype, it’s all the same name. So the qualities of Venus have changed as they’ve come down to us over time. Venus right now is kind of a cartoon figure, I write about this a lot – this may not be new to you if you’ve been following me for a while. But the ancient Venus character – Inanna, Ishtar – was a goddess not only of love and beauty, but of war and fertility. She was powerful. She was as powerful and maybe more than any of the male goddesses. So she’s really sort of gotten filtered over the years.
When Venus turns retrograde, there is this correlation with some of these old mythologies. And one is the descent of Inanna, which is a long story and I won’t share the whole thing now. But in the myth of Inanna, she goes down into the underworld to rescue her sister, Ereshkigal. And in her journey she has to let go of seven layers of clothing, seven veils, and each of those veils represent is represented by one of the planets. And in my way of looking at things, I see these as being parts of our personality. Mercury represents the mind, Venus represents love and attachment, the Moon represents emotions, etc. Of course, we know that the moon is not a planet, but it’s part of the planetary symbology. So we have to let go of all these aspects of our personality to go into the underworld, and then we come back up, just like Venus. She goes into the underworld where she’s invisible and then she rises again, there’s a resurrection. So, it’s a very significant myth, I think, and I find it really fascinating whenever Venus turns retrograde.
I read some information that I found very interesting, and I hadn’t really thought of this before, but I think it’s quite accurate. When Venus is retrograde as the you know, as she retrogrades back towards the sun. That’s the part where there’s a lot of backward looking just like all of the retrogrades: What did I do? Did I get a bad haircut? That’s kind of a classic thing. People say: don’t get a haircut when Venus is retrograde. Good thing we can’t do that now!. Anyway… Some of the things that are associated with this part of Venus retrograde where we’re sort of in the backwards looking part: We may find messages from the past, there may be opportunities to repair broken relationships. I think I talked about this last week, we may want to revise our financial resources, reallocate our portfolios, if we have them. Take a look at savings Do we have enough to provide security over this difficult time: We may decide that we want to actually change our physical appearance. It’s actually a really good time to get a haircut or to experiment with different colors or wear different makeup, whatever, to change your physical appearance. And it’s also an important time to reevaluate the things that we value.
Venus does rule values and the things that we value. Once Venus turns direct again and begins the next cycle, that’s the lucky part of the Venus retrograde. There has been sort of an accumulation of good luck while Venus is retrograde. And then once Venus turns direct them, you know, we start to be able to enjoy the benefits of Venus, the attractive power of Venus, the love, the harmony, the peacefulness, all of those good things.
The other thing about Venus retrograde I wanted to talk about today is that Venus has been squaring Neptune, and because Venus is retrograding – normally, any transit of Venus lasts for just today that’s very fleeting. But because Venus is retrograde, Venus squared Neptune on May 3 the first time and now that Venus is retrograde, it’s going to square Neptune again on the 20th , a couple of days after I post this video. And then the final phase is in late July. Venus and Neptune have a lot in common -they both have to do with love. I sometimes call Neptune the higher octave of Venus because where Venus represents personal love, personal beauty, personal attraction, Neptune is universal love and compassion, our connection to our spiritual experience, you know. A direct experience of the Divine.
When Neptune is in a challenging aspect, like a square, which is a 90 degree angle, we can sometimes get the more difficult aspects of that particular alignment. Venus is in Gemini right now or it’s very curious. It’s fast moving – we like to talk to people, we like to learn about things in Gemini. When Venus is in a strong, challenging aspect. to Neptune, there’s a tremendous amount of creativity, there’s a yearning for spiritual unity. And that’s really wonderful. But there can also be some confusion. There can also be an over-idealized view of what’s happening. “Oh, I’m sure that we’re meant to be together.” That may be true, but under a Venus square to Neptune, you might want to put that in the back of your mind till this aspect is over. We can sometimes be less realistic and more room romanticize the facts when Venus is squaring Neptune.
A few more things about this week that I want to mention the sun will enter Gemini on May 20. There will then be three planets in Gemini, including Mercury, which is happy in Gemini. That’s its home sign and Venus in Gemini, so there’s a lot of energy now for ideas and communication. But things are fluid. Maybe we’re trying on different kinds of personas, different personalities. You know, right now we’re in lockdown. Who are we going to be when this is over? There’s a lot of movement with Gemini. This is not such a good time to lay around the house or to be kind of lazy. And actually physical movement can really help us to stimulate ideas, you know, the more we stay in motion. Mercury is also highly active for the Gemini New Moon.
Between the 20th and the 25th there’s so much Mercury energy, it may be difficult to sleep and your mind may be racing. Anyway, there’s a lot of Gemini energy right now. So this is a really good time for reading and for writing, and for just sort of having ideas and brainstorms. Until we get to the 22nd when Mercury harmonizes with Saturn and we start to get more integration and more stability. So between the 18th and the 22nd or so, just a lot of motion, a lot of activity. Meditation, of course very good for calming the mind.
Mars is in Pisces right now. And I did talk about this last week, when Mars went into Pisces. That direct energy of Mars which is forceful and assertive, is less forceful and assertive in Pisces. Pisces doesn’t really like that kind of energy. Pisces wants to be kind, compassionate and all of that’s wonderful. But it can make things a little less direct and there can be some confusion about things like what do I want? What does this person want? Am I angry? I can’t really tell.
Mars is going to be conjunct Ceres. Ceres is an asteroid, maybe a planet, they’re still trying to figure it out, they’re still reevaluating. But Ceres has to do with nurturing the body mind spirit connection. It has to do with the health of our physical incarnation essentially. So when Mars is conjunct Ceres, I would just like to recommend that you pay very close attention to the food that you’re eating, make certain that it’s going to nourish the body because with this Mars situation, there is a lot of energy, especially when it’s conjunct Ceres and you’re going to need a good fuel to make sure that you can utilize that energy and that it runs through the body appropriately so that it can be used. So, that’s about all I have for this week. Thanks so much for tuning in. If you like this video, please be sure to subscribe, ring the little bell to be notified of new videos.
