This question came up recently and I wanted to share this discussion with others as well.
Anthony writes:
With Saturn in Scorpio squaring Jupiter in Leo, will that limit and restrict the gifts/opportunities/freedom Leos were to receive from Jupiter? Only manifest opportunities that are “real”/in our best interests? Make us work harder for success?
It especially concerns me with a 9 Leo sun and 17 Taurus moon. Saturn will take its final swipe at my moon as Jupiter lights up my sun the one and only time so I worry about being blocked from taking advantage of the opportunities I was supposed to get. By the time Saturn is out of orb Jupiter will be, too, so looks like I will miss out this time.
I don’t know anything about the rest of Anthony’s chart which could shed more light on his concern over lost opportunities and sense of powerlessness over the ebb and flow of opportunity in one’s life. The square of Saturn to Jupiter CAN have the effect of limiting Jupiter’s expansion and encourages us to be sure that we are not all just expansion and optimism but also practical and grounded. Squares aren’t inherently “bad” but they are stronger – Saturn squaring Jupiter can be a time of great success because we work hard (Saturn) as well as think positively (Jupiter).
Of course there will be other things going on in his chart at the same time so we can’t really look at this one element and predict what will occur. A lot of it depends on where he is in his life and what he needs in order to learn to grow and become more integrated. But this phrase troubles me: ” I worry about being blocked from taking advantage of the opportunities I was supposed to get.” The Universe doesn’t work this way – it never blocks us from experiences we are supposed to have. WE sometimes block ourselves, but that is generally a matter of choice. When he says it “looks like I will miss out this time” he is surrendering his own Will to what he perceives of the planetary meanings.
Saturn is not a bad guy who keeps us from getting Jupiter’s gifts. Saturn is the teacher who wants to make sure that you don’t blow your audition with Juillard by becoming overconfident. Saturn can point the way to finding enduring success when Jupiter opens the doors of opportunity. Saturn is a mentor who will point out your flaws so that they can be improved and perfected. It is really only then that we can take the fullest advantage of Jupiter’s gifts.
I strongly encourage everyone to make friends with Saturn. He is a powerful ally and a crucial part of our personal development. You can learn more about Saturn’s beneficence here or listen to my radio show called “Saturn, Beast and Prince” right here.
It’s very difficult for me to see Saturn in a positive light since my life was destroyed since Saturn began transiting my first house in 1998. Yes, it’s been going on THAT long. But the above point of view is appreciated.
While I’m happy that so many people know enough about astrology to be able to utilize it in your life, I am concerned when people blame astrology for their problems just as when we blame any factor outside ourselves. If we blame an external factor, whether Saturn to Pluto, OR ourselves, we become stuck and feel helpless.
Instead we can start looking for the door that will enable ourselves to change the situation we are in. Jupiter won’t “give” you a new job or relationship. A planetary transit won’t magically make things better. It sounds trite but it’s true that change has to come from within. If you can’t find the way yourself, get some help from someone you trust.
word.
Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to devote an entire post to my question.
From an intellectual standpoint I believe you and hope someday I am wise enough to be able to see Saturn the way you do. But when hardships last for years and years even when you feel like you are being a good person and doing everything right and working hard and still nothing works out it’s just difficult to see the point of going on sometimes.
Feel free to correct me because it doesn’t sound right, but to me it sounds like you are saying, “In God’s/Saturn’s/the Universe’s plan things aren’t supposed to work out for me, or at least not for lengthy periods of my life,” which is just hard for me to wrap my head around. Saturn is the planet of karma and I just don’t know what I’ve done maybe in a past life to deserve so much pain and failure.
I haven’t felt like I’ve had free will during much my life. My choices have always been something bad or something worse so the last few years especially it hasn’t seemed like I’ve had a choice at all. In my generation you have people who are graduating as lawyers or engineers at the top of their class, they have worked hard, but because of the economy they can’t find work, so I don’t get how it’s their fault. We put in the work but no rewards. We are stuck living with our parents with tons of debt, infantilized rather than being allowed to become adults and have the freedom to make our own choices, then everyone knocks us for being entitled. Trust me we would take any opportunity we could get and be grateful for it.
You’re right, Saturn isn’t the only hard transit going for me, the Cardinal Cross is transiting my angles (13 Libra rising w 15 Cancer MC). I am only 30 but hopefully someday I can get to a point where I feel like I do have free will and control over my own life.
For the time being I just have to accept this is the Universe’s plan for me whether I like it or not. I am going to try to do the right thing and work hard and be a good person whether that leads to success and happiness or not. Life would just be a lot less miserable if it did.
Thanks again for all the advice.
Well, I don’t think it will be as bad as missing out on something or not having an opportunity. It’s the silver lining, to perhaps a responsibility. A reward even though there might me some difficulties getting there. A bright spot in the mist of perhaps struggle. The opposition to the Moon, could just mean an out of balanced perception, due to the emotional view of it. A dreading to deal with something that has to be dealt with, but in the end you have to look at the silver lining to the problem. Being of course optimistic. Avoid looking at the negative, the Saturn influence. Focus on the Jupiter side to it. A new job, a new career path, due to a letting go of something else.

Thanks, I’d love to let go of this phase and move on, but it’s not letting go of me! :) If Jupiter comes and gives me something positive to look at (like a job) I will certainly focus on that and be grateful.
Maybe this long period of pain is teaching me to be grateful and not take it for granted when something good finally does come along and keep my generation from becoming greedy the way previous generations were/are leading to the destruction of our economy.
KaD, I completely agree with you about Saturn.
I hit enter before I had finished.
As I was saying I have Saturn in Gemini at the apex of my chart and it has been a heavy weight that I have had to carry my entire life.
It’s interesting because my ‘real’ name means ‘responsible’ and I feel as if I have been made to be responsible for the actions of others my entire life.
Even when I venture into the most casual of relationships there always seems to be an expectation on me to give more than I receive.
Hey peeps. I’m a midlife Cap with Saturn in the first house, born under the Uranus-Pluto conjunction. I agree with Lynn that everyone needs to make friends with Saturn. Trust me, I wish life was easier. I’m in a similar financial boat as the millennials due to the fact that I got my degree in 2004. It’s been super tough and the things we were promised by following the popular script: get a degree, get a good job, society will work with you — yeah that was all blown. I guess the solution is NOT to follow the script. We always have a choice to create the structures (Saturn) that will work for us. Under the U-P square all the corrupt structures are coming down. We should rejoice! Never forget your creative power. It’s truly through the rules that bind you that you learn where your choices lie.
Nicely said!!
