Chapel Hill is working hard to remain a quaint village while it experiences rapid growth.  Home to the University of North Carolina, the oldest state University in the nation, Chapel Hill has much to offer.  The University provides many cultural activities including the Paul Green Theater with the Playmakers Repertory Company, and a multitude of dance and musical performances. The quaint downtown offers fabulous restaurants and small shops.  Families enjoy Rainbow Soccer, the Chapel Hill Community Center with its own basketball team, the city baseball league, and many other activities. The schools in Chapel Hill and Carrboro consistently rank at the top of school rankings in North Carolina. Neighborhoods in Chapel Hill range from older neighborhoods that are closer to town and the university, newer neighborhoods with transitional homes and open floorplans, and more rural areas with homesites on an acre or more. The I-40 interchange provides easy access to Research Triangle Park and Duke University.

Downtown Durham is a great area for those who prefer quaint older homes and neighborhoods near great restaurants and shopping.  Home to the popular Trinity Park and Watts Hospital neighborhoods which feature a variety of older homes from Craftsman-style bungalows to Mission-style mansions and historic four-squares, Durham's diversity and focus on the arts offers a variety of cultural activities as well.  The proximity to Duke University and the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science, to name only a few, presents a multitude of activities for singles and families.  This area is served by Northgate Mall, which features traditional "mall" shops as well as smaller boutiques. There are several interesting shopping areas such as Brightleaf Square which is housed in an exquisitely renovated tobacco warehouse, and the Ninth Street area with its many interesting shops and restaurants. North Durham is not represented on this map, but offers a wide range of housing opportunties from older, more established neighborhoods with larger lots (half acre and more), to newer neighborhoods such as Treyburn, with its exquisite golf course and country club, or Black Horse Run which appeals to equestrians. Home prices in North Durham begin in the $120s and soar over $1 million in Treyburn.

Southwest Durham is the fastest growing area in Durham.  Ten minutes to Duke, Chapel Hill and the Research Triangle Park, Southwest Durham offers affordable living that is close to everything. This area is just a short drive to Jordan Lake's recreational opportunities, and its proximity to I-40 means easy access to Raleigh as well. Shoppers will enjoy the new Southpointe Mall, which will be completed by the year 2001. Other shopping opportunities include South Square Mall and Woodcroft Shopping Center, with several interesting restaurants including sushi, and a neighborhood bookstore.

There are many neighborhoods in southwest Durham including more established areas with older homes, and the newer neighborhoods with pool, tennis and recreation areas such as Woodcroft and Hope Valley Farms. Prices of townhomes begin under $100,000, and home prices at around $120,000. Carrboro, known as the "Paris of the Piedmont," is a small town adjacent to Chapel Hill.  Although Carrboro and Chapel Hill share the famed Chapel Hill school system, Carrboro has its own government and history.  Carr Mill Mall, an old textile mill and warehouse, has been beautifully renovated and offers interesting shops from small boutiques to Talbots. The ArtsCenter of Carrboro offers concerts and theater as well as art galleries and classes. Carrboro residents enjoy the many miles of bikeways that run through the town, and the local Farmer's Market at the Town Hall center. Summers bring the outdoor concerts at Weaver Street Market.

Although Carrboro was known in the past for its affordable housing, as its popularity has increased so have the prices of homes, which range from $125,000 to just over $300,000. Townhomes and condos range from $75,000 to $150,000.  Check out Carrboro's website.

Northern Chatham County is one of the fastest growing areas in the Triangle.  Traditionally a more rural area devoted to farming and the country life, Chatham County has become more popular with developers as more people discover its peaceful lifestyle. Fifteen minutes from Chapel Hill and 30 minutes from the Research Triangle Park,  northern Chatham provides the opportunity for quiet rural living just a short commute away.  The convenient shopping at Cole Park Plaza offers a gourmet grocery and several restaurants.

This  is one of the few areas left where you can purchase a home on a one-acre lot for under $200,000.  Home prices range from $115,000 to over $300,000. Check out the Chatham County website.

Northern Chatham is also home to two large neighborhoods: Governors Club, a premiere golf course community with home prices beginning at $350,000 and rising up over $2 million, and Fearrington, a quaint community of homes centered around the Fearrington House Inn and Market, with home prices ranging from $140,000 to $275,000.

Eastern Chatham County is a rural area adjacent to Wake County, just over the Cary line.  The proximity of this area to Research Triangle Park, Jordan Lake, Raleigh and Cary makes it extremely desirable for those Triangle workers who wish to live in the country or close to Jordan Lake. The area is still relatively undeveloped, and shopping is a short drive away in Durham.

Northern Orange County includes the rural area adjacent to Chapel Hill, as well as Hillsborough.  The completion of I-40 to I-85 has made this area a quick commute to Research Triangle Park and surrounding areas.  Living in Orange County offers quiet rural life close to the c onveniences of town living, with easy access to shopping and restaurants. The Timberlyne Shopping Center on the north side of Chapel Hill offers two movie theaters, several fine restaurants, grocery stores, and other shops and medical facilities.  The town of Hillsborough offers historic charm and quaint homes, as well as convenient shopping. The Efland area has become more and more popular as an inexpensive rural alternative.

Cary is a bedroom community of the Research Triangle Park.  In the past fifteen years the population of Cary has climbed from less than 10,000 to almost 90,000 in 1999.  For this reason, most of Cary is very new and features beautiful subdivisions with appealing features for families such as swim/tennis clubs and good neighborhood schools.  Cary is close to the cultural opportunities offered in Raleigh, and offers excellent shopping at Cary Towne Center. Cary neighborhoods overlap into Apex, a charming small town in Chatham County.

North Raleigh (outside the beltline) includes some of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Raleigh, including older, more established neighborhoods such as the North Ridge area, and many new neighborhoods on homesites of over an acre.  A little farther from the hustle and bustle, north Raleigh is a popular community for those who want to be close to the city but still have their own quiet piece of land.  There are several shopping centers in North Raleigh, and many feature excellent restaurants and small boutique shops. North Raleigh is also convenient to major shopping centers such as Crabtree Valley Mall and North Hills mall.

Home prices in North Raleigh range from $175,000 to over $1 million.

West Raleigh, including "inside the beltline," is an established community adjacent to North Carolina State University and the downtown area, including the arts district near Moore Square and smaller colleges such as Meredith, Shaw, and Peace College.  Shopping opportunities range from the smaller boutique strip centers to the larger Cameron Village with its unusual small shops. The North Carolina fairgrounds offer regular flea markets and interesting expos, and there are many cultural opportunities available at the various colleges and downtown Raleigh. The area "inside the beltline" is extremely desirable and popular with home buyers. The charming homes in established neighborhoods range in price from $180,000 to over $300,000. Condos and townhomes are available in the downtown area from the $130s, and there are more and more condos available in downtown Raleigh near the arts district for a more urban lifestyle.
