  Location, of course, is always important. How far do you want to live from where you work? Do you want to be near a grocery store? Do you need a neighborhood with lots of children for yours to play with?

      There are other considerations too, of course: Do you want an older home with established landscaping and large trees, or a brand-new home with new paint, carpet and appliances? Do you want a large lot and plenty of privacy, or do you prefer low-maintenance yards?

      Then there are the more personal decisions based on how you and your family want to live. Do you like an open floor plan where the family can all be together? Or do you need private spaces in which to retreat? Do you prefer spacious rooms with high ceilings, or a cozy home with smaller rooms?

      What about the kitchen? Do you want a large kitchen for two cooks, or a smaller efficient kitchen? Do you want to be able to eat in the kitchen, or only in the dining room?

      How much storage do you need? Can your belongings fit in a small attic, or do you need a walk-up space? Can you live without a garage?

      Then think about the home you live in now. What do you like about it? What are the weak points? The more you know about the way you want to live, the easier it will be to find a home that will work for you.
