PITTSBORO
Pittsboro history
(Also see Chatham County). The town which we now call Pittsboro was originally known as "Chatham Court House" since the county courthouse existed on that property. The town of Pittsboro was established in 1785 and was originally named Pittsborough after Sir William Pitt's son, William Pitt the Younger.
The Haw River protected Pittsboro from the devastation other Southern towns experienced at the end of the Civil War; it flooded and the Northern troops could not cross over it to reach the town.
Pittsboro was once the industrial and retail center for the county with car dealerships and poultry mills and the largest clothing label maker in the world. Pittsboro's charming downtown still offers restaurants, boutiques, interesting art galleries and gift shops and attracts sightseeing visitors from neighboring communities as well as downtown.
Life in Pittsboro
Because Pittsboro still retains its small town charm, life in Pittsboro is much like life in a traditional small town. A wide variety of restaurants offer gathering places with cuisine ranging from Greek to Japanese to Italian to traditional country cooking. There is even an old-fashioned soda shoppe that still serves up malted milk shakes. The Pittsboro General Store is a gathering place both for meals, as an art gallery, and as a venue for musical performances, and the City Tap has a huge selection of beers on tap. Davenport and Winkleperry is a Steampunk club that offers intriguing and unusual events as well as a wonderful coffee bar and cafe. The Chatham Marketplace provides a local spot for the purchase of local organic produce as well as all kinds of natural foods.
Most Pittsboro residents commute out of the county to get to work, but when they arrive home Pittsboro provides all of the amenities that make a community truly liveable.
Pittsboro Neighborhoods
Besides the older downtown section which offers charming homes and cottages that date from the early 20th century, there are quite a few newer neighborhoods from which one can still easily walk into downtown.
