HILLSBOROUGH
Hillsborough history
The history of Hillsborough goes back farther than any other Triangle town since there is evidence of Native American (Occaneechi and Saponi) villages on the site of the town dating back to 1000 CE. A town known as Corbin Town was first established in 1754 where the Great Indian Trading Path met the Eno River and was a center of North Carolina political activity during the Revolutionary War period. It was renamed Childsburgh in 1759 and finally came to be called Hillsborough in 1766.
Hillsborough was home to the Regulator movement as farmers rose up against corrupt British Colonial rulers. During the American Revolution, Hillsborough served as the home of the state legislature and as a military center. Hillsborough still retains several 18th and 19th century buildings and homes including the Burwell School for Young Ladies and the famous Ayr Mount fully restored private home, both of which are open to the public.
Life in Hillsborough
Like so many other Triangle communities, Hillsborough's downtown area is flourishing with gift and antique shops, art galleries and restaurants. Though Hillsborough is perhaps the smallest of the Triangle towns, it nevertheless offers plenty for folks to do. The Last Friday Art Walk is an excellent way for neighbors to meet and enjoy a constantly changing exhibition of art and enjoy delicious food. Hillsborough even offers a downtown pub with live music, and Weaver Street Market's Hillsborough store hosts wine tasting, open mic nights, and other fun happenings.
Hillsborough is located about 15 miles from downtown Durham and downtown Chapel Hill and only 22 miles from the Research Triangle Park, making it easy to access all of the opportunities across the Triangle.
Hillsborough Neighborhoods
The town of Hillsborough offers a limited number of historic homes in the downtown area, although these properties do not come on the market all that often. Most of the homes in the Hillsborough area are in neighborhoods lying outside of the downtown area that were built in the period between 1980 and 2000.
