Carrboro began its life back in 1882 as little more than a railroad station for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Once the railroad station was built the town began to grow around it, beginning with a cotton mill in 1898 called the Alberta. At the time the town was called Venable, but after the Carr family purchased the mill from the Lloyds the name was changed to the Carr Mill. Today we know it as Carr Mill Mall, a major shopping destination for Chapel Hill and Carrboro. (Visit carrboro.com for more fascinating historical facts.)
